This 1954 fire lookout sits at 7,984 feet on the rim of Newberry Caldera, offering sweeping views of Paulina Lake, East Lake, and the Cascade Range. The 14×14-foot cab houses seasonal fire detection equipment and provides shelter during the brutal high-desert weather. The lookout is staffed during fire season and visitors can climb the stairs for panoramic views when staff are present.
Access via gravel Forest Road 21 from Highway 97, then a steep switchback road to the summit. Road typically snow-free June through October. The final approach is rough but manageable for high-clearance vehicles. Parking is limited at the top, and the site gets busy on clear weekends when visibility stretches from Mount Hood to the Three Sisters.
