Palo Duro Canyon Lighthouse Trail Road

Deep into America's second-largest canyon

Moderate

The Palo Duro Canyon cuts 800 feet deep into the Texas Panhandle caprock, exposing 240 million years of geological history in bands of red, orange, and yellow stone. This 6-mile round-trip route drops you into the canyon via a winding dirt road that demands respect – loose rock, steep grades, and washouts can catch the unprepared off guard. The payoff is the Lighthouse, a 310-foot sandstone spire that’s become the canyon’s signature landmark, plus access to remote camping areas along the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River.

You’ll want high-clearance 4WD for the descent and a low gear for the climb out – this isn’t stock SUV territory despite what some rangers might tell you. Summer brings furnace-like heat that can cook brakes on the way down, so spring and fall are your best bets. State park entry fee required, decent cell service at the rim but none in the canyon. The reward is camping under some of the darkest skies in Texas and waking up inside one of the most spectacular geological formations in the country.
