Cebolla Creek Road — Gunnison Gorge to Blue Mesa via Curecanti Backcountry

Colorado canyon country the crowds skip.

Moderate

Most Colorado overlanders chase the famous San Juan passes and ignore the canyon country north of Gunnison, which is exactly why Cebolla Creek Road rewards those who look at the map a little harder. The route runs from Highway 149 near Lake City northwest through Gunnison National Forest, crossing Cebolla Creek multiple times before climbing onto open mesa country with sweeping views of the Blue Mesa Reservoir drainage and the far walls of Gunnison Gorge. The creek crossings — knee-deep in early summer snowmelt — are the crux. The upper mesas offer genuine solitude and established dispersed camping spots with unobstructed views of the West Elk Mountains to the north.

High clearance and 4WD are required once you leave the pavement; the creek crossings demand it. A lifted truck or purpose-built rig is the right call. Mud season in May and early June will swallow lesser vehicles. Best window is mid-July through September. No permit needed. Gunnison is your fuel and resupply town — 40 miles east. Cell service disappears within two miles of the highway. Carry water filtration; the creek runs clean but don’t risk it without treatment. This route is a legitimate two-day overland loop when combined with Forest Road 788 north toward Sapinero.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner run Cebolla Creek Road, or do I need a lift?

A stock 4WD high-clearance truck or SUV can handle it, but you'll want at minimum 8–9 inches of clearance for the creek crossing and rocky shelf sections. A lift helps but isn't mandatory — aired-down tires and a locking diff will serve you better than lift alone here.

When does Cebolla Creek Road actually open in spring, and is it accessible in fall?

July through September is the reliable window — snowmelt keeps the upper elevations and creek crossing sketchy well into June most years. Fall access into October is possible in dry years, but early snow above 9,000 feet can close it fast and without warning.

Do I need a permit to drive or camp on Cebolla Creek Road?

No permit required for the drive or dispersed camping on Gunnison National Forest land. Standard forest rules apply — camp 300 feet from water sources and pack out everything. The Curecanti NRA sections fall under NPS jurisdiction, so check current regulations at the Gunnison office before you go.

What's the hardest section, and what should I actually be ready for?

The Cebolla Creek crossing is the crux — depth varies significantly with snowmelt and recent rain, and there's no bridge. Beyond that, the shelf road descending toward the gorge is narrow with loose surface and no guardrails; one wrong line and you're in a bad spot. Go slow, read the water before you commit to the crossing.

How far is the nearest gas, and is there any reliable water on the route?

Gunnison is your last fuel stop — top off there, as it's roughly 40 miles with zero services on trail. Cebolla Creek has water but treat everything; cattle graze this drainage and giardia is a real concern.
