Casper Mountain Backcountry Circuit

Technical mountain circuit near Casper

Difficult

Casper Mountain rises like an island of pine and granite from Wyoming’s high plains, crisscrossed by mining roads dating back to the 1890s. This circuit connects several old routes including the Muddy Mountain Road and Garden Creek Road, threading through dense lodgepole forests and across exposed granite slabs. The most challenging section drops into Edness Kimball Wilkins State Park via a steep, rocky descent that’ll have you in low range and crawling speed. Several creek crossings and loose rock sections demand attention, especially the technical climb past the old Crimson Dawn Museum site.

This is difficult terrain requiring 4WD with skid plates and good ground clearance. Summer thunderstorms create flash flood risks in the drainages, and snow closes upper elevations from November through April. The mountain’s proximity to Casper means decent cell coverage in spots, but carry emergency gear anyway. What you get is a taste of technical Wyoming wheeling just minutes from town, with multiple fire tower viewpoints, historic mining remnants, and excellent dispersed camping among the aspens and pines.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle this trail?

Yes, but barely - you'll need solid rock crawling skills and skid plates are highly recommended. The technical rock sections will test your breakover angle and require careful line selection.

Is the trail accessible in late fall or early spring?

May through October only - snow closes the higher elevations and makes the rock sections extremely dangerous. Even late May can have snow patches above 7,500 feet.

Do I need permits to run Casper Mountain Backcountry Circuit?

No permits required, but stay on designated trails as some areas are private property. Natrona County Parks manages the area with minimal restrictions.

What's the hardest section of the trail?

The climb to Lookout Point around mile 18 - steep technical rock ledges with loose shale that'll punish sloppy throttle control. Take your time and use a spotter on the worst climbs.

Are there reliable water sources for the overnight camping?

The water crossings are seasonal streams that can dry up by late summer - pack all your water. Dispersed camping is available but no developed facilities or reliable water sources exist on the mountain.
