Seminoe-Alcova Back Country Byway

Official backcountry byway through granite mountains

Difficult

The Bureau of Land Management designated this 54-mile route as Wyoming’s first official Back Country Byway, connecting Seminoe and Alcova reservoirs through the rugged Haystack Mountains. The trail follows old mining roads past abandoned uranium prospects and through granite outcrops that challenge even experienced drivers. Bradley Peak offers panoramic views of the Granite Mountains, while the route passes through areas where the Oregon Trail pioneers struggled across the North Platte River crossing at Red Buttes.

This is a technical 4WD route requiring good ground clearance and rock sliders for the rougher sections. Sharp granite can shred sidewalls, so carry tire repair kit and full-size spare. The byway is accessible most of the year except during spring mud season and heavy snow. Dispersed camping is excellent throughout, with fishing available at both reservoirs. Bring plenty of water—natural sources are scarce in this high desert country. The route rewards those who complete it with genuine solitude and Wyoming’s trademark big sky country.
