Carara to Tárcoles River Crocodile Bridge Circuit

Where forest meets river meets prehistoric giants

Easy

This dusty track weaves through Carara National Park’s transition zone where Pacific dry forest meets Central Valley rainforest, creating one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse corridors. The rutted dirt roads snake past massive cecropia trees and hidden lagoons before emerging at the Tárcoles River bridge, where 20-foot crocodiles bask below like prehistoric logs. Local guides at the bridge will spot iguanas, scarlet macaws, and roseate spoonbills while you count crocs in the murky water.

Easy-moderate difficulty with seasonal flooding that can make creek crossings interesting during rainy season. Any vehicle with decent ground clearance handles it dry, but pack recovery gear for the wet months when clay turns slick as ice. Best visited early morning when wildlife is active and before tour buses arrive at the bridge. No permits for the access roads, but park entrance fees apply if you detour into Carara proper. The real reward isn’t just the crocs — it’s the transitional ecosystem most people blow past on Highway 34.
