Cordillera de Talamanca San José to San Gerardo de Rivas Highland Route

Highland coffee route to Chirripó basecamp

Moderate

This highland route threads through Costa Rica’s coffee heartland, climbing from San José’s sprawling valley through terraced plantations and cloud forest patches toward San Gerardo de Rivas. The road gains serious elevation as it cuts through the Cordillera de Talamanca, passing working fincas where campesinos still harvest beans by hand. Key waypoints include the village of Santa María de Dota and the technical descent into the Río General valley, where the route crosses three substantial creek fords before the final push to San Gerardo.

Moderate difficulty with high clearance essential for the creek crossings and loose gravel sections above 2,000 meters elevation. Stock 4WD handles most of it, but approach plates help on the steeper plantation access roads. Dry season (December-April) offers better traction and clearer mountain views. Fuel up in San José — no services for 80 kilometers. Dispersed camping available near the cloud forest sections, and you’ll earn stunning views of the Talamanca range plus access to some of Costa Rica’s best highland birding.
