Ruta del Henequén Yucatán
Colonial plantation roads through cenote country
The Henequén Route connects dozens of abandoned sisal plantations across the Yucatán Peninsula’s henequén triangle, where vast haciendas once produced rope fiber for the world’s navies. Starting from Mérida, the route follows old plantation roads through towns like Temax, Motul, and Izamal, passing crumbling hacienda ruins with their distinctive chimneys and processing buildings. Hidden cenotes dot the limestone landscape, including the spectacular Cenote X-Batún where crystal-clear water reflects ancient stalactites.
Easy to moderate trail suitable for stock SUVs, though some plantation access roads require high clearance for rough limestone surfaces. Year-round access but avoid rainy season (May-October) when humidity becomes oppressive and dirt sections turn to sticky mud. No permits required but respect private property around active haciendas. Best explored over 2-3 days with overnight stays in colonial towns. Combines Mexican history, jungle exploration, and world-class cenote swimming in one unique route.
