Ruta Maya Archaeological Circuit

Maya ruins through Mexico's jaguar country

Moderate

The Ruta Maya Archaeological Circuit threads through the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve via muddy logging roads and ancient Maya causeways, connecting major sites like Calakmul, Balamku, and Rio Bec with dozens of unexcavated mounds buried in jungle. This route follows the old chicle (chewing gum) collectors’ paths through some of Mexico’s last intact tropical rainforest, where howler monkeys announce dawn and jaguars still roam. Water crossings over seasonal streams turn treacherous during rainy season, when clay soil becomes impassable bog.

High-clearance 4WD essential, with mud tires recommended for wet season travel. Dry season (December-April) offers better driving but oppressive heat. Carry extra fuel—no services for 150+ miles between Escárcega and Xpujil. Camping allowed at designated archaeological sites with advance permits from INAH. The reward is having thousand-year-old pyramids to yourself while camping in howler monkey territory, plus the chance to spot one of Mexico’s 200 remaining jaguars.
