Onyx Ranch Road

Joshua tree forests meet volcanic tablelands

Moderate

Starting from Highway 395 near Little Lake, this route cuts across BLM land through dense Joshua tree forests and volcanic mesas, eventually connecting to the Coso Range backcountry. The road passes active geothermal areas where you can see steam venting from the ground, remnants of the area’s volcanic past. Onyx Peak dominates the skyline as you navigate around lava flows and through some of the densest Joshua tree stands in California.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the full route, though passenger cars can handle the first few miles. Rocky sections and wash crossings demand attention, especially after storms. Spring brings wildflower blooms that rival anywhere in the desert. No permits required, but respect private property boundaries and active geothermal operations. Carry extra water and fuel — services are sparse between Ridgecrest and Lone Pine. The payoff is pristine high desert scenery, excellent camping under star-filled skies, and a taste of the real Mojave away from the tourist crowds.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler make it through Onyx Ranch Road?

Yes, a stock Wrangler has enough clearance for this moderate trail. The main challenges are rocky sections and some loose volcanic soil, but nothing requiring major modifications.

Is Onyx Ranch Road accessible in winter?

Winter is actually prime time for this trail - cooler temperatures make the desert crossing much more pleasant. Avoid during summer heat and after heavy rains when the volcanic soil gets slippery.

Do I need any permits to drive Onyx Ranch Road?

No permits required since it's on BLM land. Free dispersed camping is allowed along the route following standard BLM guidelines.

What's the hardest section of the trail?

The rockiest stretch comes about halfway through where you're navigating loose volcanic rock and some deeper ruts. Take it slow and pick your line carefully through the tablelands.

How far can I get on a tank of gas from Ridgecrest?

The 18-mile trail plus drive time to/from Ridgecrest should easily fit within one tank for most 4x4s. Fill up in Ridgecrest since there's no fuel available once you're out there.
