Thumb Butte Loop
Easy high-country loop through granite and pines
The Thumb Butte Loop circles around Prescott’s iconic landmark through rolling hills covered in granite boulders and ponderosa pines. Starting from Thumb Butte Road, the loop follows well-maintained forest roads past scattered mining claims and through classic Arizona high country at 6,000 feet elevation. You’ll pass several established dispersed camping spots with fire rings and good access to hiking trails around the actual Thumb Butte formation.
This is an easy route suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, making it perfect for families or first-time overlanders. Best seasons are late spring through early fall, though winter can be beautiful with snow. No permits required and dispersed camping is allowed throughout the area with a 14-day limit. It’s a great introduction to Arizona’s high country without the technical demands of more challenging routes — plus you’re only minutes from Prescott for supplies.
