Hole-in-the-Rock Road — Grand Staircase to Dance Hall Rock and Beyond

Mormon pioneer grit through Utah's raw desert.

Moderate

In the winter of 1879-1880, 250 Mormon settlers blasted a notch through sandstone cliffs and lowered wagons into Glen Canyon. You’re retracing that grit on a two-track that rolls south from Escalante through bentonite clay flats, past Dance Hall Rock — a natural amphitheater where those pioneers held dances to keep morale alive — and toward Chimney Rock and the Devils Garden hoodoo field. The road itself is deceptively straightforward on dry days, but bentonite clay turns to axle-deep grease with any moisture. The Pioneer Register at Hole-in-the-Rock itself is scratched with names of those original settlers, still legible in the sandstone.

Dry weather makes this a high-clearance dirt-road run; rain turns it into an Expert-level mud trap with zero recovery options and no cell signal for 50 miles. A stock 4WD with all-terrain tires handles dry conditions, but run mud-terrains if there’s any weather in the forecast. Fuel up in Escalante — there’s nothing south of town. Water is scarce; carry at least 10 gallons. Spring and fall are the windows. Summer heat is brutal and winter rains ruin the road for weeks. Dispersed camping along the corridor is wide open and spectacular.
