Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area Mining Roads

Alpine mining roads with Cascade Range views

Moderate

The Coquihalla Summit area holds a maze of old mining roads that wind through subalpine terrain at 4,000+ feet elevation. These routes access abandoned copper and gold workings from the early 1900s, including the remnants of the Coquihalla Mine and scattered tailings piles. The main spine road branches into multiple spurs that climb toward Zopkios Ridge and the Needle Peak area, offering commanding views of the Cascade Range and Fraser Valley below.

Moderate difficulty with some steep, loose sections requiring good traction control and careful throttle work. Stock 4WD with decent clearance handles most routes, though a few technical climbs demand low-range and proper line selection. Best accessed May through October when snow clears the higher elevations. No permits required, and dispersed camping is allowed in designated areas. Cell coverage is spotty but improves on the higher ridges. Bring extra fuel as the nearest services are in Merritt or Hope, both an hour away.
