Carpathian Mountains Logging Roads Circuit

Communist logging roads through bear country

Difficult

These forgotten arterial logging roads were carved deep into the Carpathian Mountains during Ceaușescu’s industrial push, connecting villages like Râșca and Câmpulung Moldovenesc through terrain that still harbors Europe’s largest brown bear population. The main spine follows the old DJ171C forestry road network, climbing to over 1,600 meters through dense spruce forests where logging trucks once hauled timber to Soviet mills. You’ll ford the Bistrița Aurie river multiple times and navigate washouts that have claimed entire road sections since the infrastructure was abandoned.

This is difficult driving demanding high ground clearance, diff locks, and recovery gear—these roads weren’t maintained after 1989 and nature is reclaiming them fast. Stock vehicles get stuck or stranded. Best attempted June through September when snow doesn’t block the high passes, but carry chains regardless. No permits required, but inform locals of your route since rescue infrastructure is nonexistent. Fill every container with fuel in Câmpulung—you’re entering genuine wilderness where wolves still hunt and shepherds live off-grid for months.
