Maramureș Logging Roads Circuit

Europe's last wilderness logging network

Expert

Hidden in Romania’s northern borderlands, Maramureș county harbors Europe’s last great wilderness logging operation—a spider web of timber roads that penetrate forests unchanged since medieval times. These tracks follow 19th-century narrow-gauge rail grades up valleys where brown bears own the night and wooden Orthodox churches mark forgotten villages. The route climbs to Pietrosul Rodnei peak at 2,303 meters, Romania’s highest accessible point by vehicle, through primeval spruce forests that carpet the Carpathian spine.

Expert-level terrain demands serious 4WD with diff locks, recovery gear, and preferably convoy travel. Mud can be axle-deep, stream crossings unmarked, and GPS coordinates worthless under thick canopy. Summer’s the only season—snow blocks access October through May. No permits required but notify local forestry posts of your route. Fuel and supplies in Baia Mare or Sighetu Marmației; carry extra everything. Wild camping legal throughout, but this is real wilderness where preparation separates adventure from catastrophe.
