Carpathian Logging Roads Apuseni Mountains Circuit

Communist logging roads through limestone peaks

Difficult

The Romanian Communist Party built these logging roads to strip the Apuseni Mountains bare, but forty years later they’ve become some of Europe’s finest technical driving. This circuit connects the Scărișoara Ice Cave with the abandoned copper mines at Roșia Montană via forestry roads that climb from 400 meters to over 1,800 meters elevation. The descent into Arieș Valley requires compound low—loose shale switchbacks with no guardrails and a 300-meter drop that’ll make passengers question their life choices.

Difficult rating with expert-level sections. Modified 4WD essential, underbody protection mandatory, recovery gear strongly advised. Best June through September when snow clears and roads dry out. No permits but notify local authorities of your route. You’ll earn access to Europe’s largest underground glacier, wild camping spots where brown bears still roam, and the humbling sight of mountains slowly healing from industrial scars.
