Ottawa National Forest Black River Recreation Area Gorge Technical Route

Waterfall gorge technical through volcanic country

Expert

The Black River Gorge route drops into one of Michigan’s most dramatic watersheds, where the Black River has carved a series of deep gorges and waterfalls through ancient volcanic rock over the past 10,000 years. This eight-mile technical route follows old logging roads and mining tracks to access five major waterfalls – Sandstone, Gorge, Pothole, Conglomerate, and the crown jewel, Rainbow Falls, where the river plunges 40 feet into Lake Superior. The gnarliest section navigates the rim trail above Conglomerate Falls, where loose shale and exposed root systems create wheel-lifting challenges that separate the confident from the careful.

This is expert-level terrain that demands lockers or at minimum a limited slip differential, plus rock sliders and skid plates. The loose shale shelves and off-camber sections will punish stock vehicles and reward those with quality recovery points. Run it June through September when water levels drop enough to expose the technical rock gardens. No camping along the route, but nearby dispersed sites exist. What you get is access to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Great Lakes region without the crowds – these falls require commitment to reach.
