Ptarmigan Creek FSR to Ptarmigan Lake — Similkameen Highlands

Steep shale and cold alpine above the Similkameen.

Difficult

The Ptarmigan Creek Forest Service Road branches off the Similkameen Valley northwest of Princeton and wastes no time making its intentions clear. The lower section is fast gravel, but by the 15 km mark the road narrows, the grade steepens past 15%, and loose shale starts testing your approach angle. The route tops out near Ptarmigan Lake — a cold, wind-scoured alpine basin ringed by ptarmigan country that sees far less traffic than the more accessible lakes in the Manning Park corridor nearby. Watch for the hard left switchback at the 18 km mark; it’s a full-lock turn on loose rock that catches unprepared drivers.

You need a capable 4WD rig with lockers or aggressive traction control — a lifted truck on 35s is the sweet spot. Axle-articulation matters on the upper shelf road where the camber pushes hard toward the downhill edge. Best window is mid-July through early October; the road holds snow late and gets icy again fast in September at elevation. No services in Princeton are only 50 km away so fuel up before you go. Free dispersed camping is available at the lake in designated flat spots. Cell service is gone before you leave the valley floor. Worth every kilometer.
