Trans-Andean Highway – Pucallpa to Lima

The Trans-Andean Highway cuts a brutal path from the steaming Amazon basin at Pucallpa up and over the Cordillera Central to Lima on the Pacific. You’ll climb from 500 feet above sea level to over 15,000 feet at Ticlio Pass, the highest point on any major Peruvian highway. The route punches through cloud forest, alpine tundra, and endless switchbacks carved into sheer mountainsides. Landslides are common during rainy season, and the thin air at altitude will test both you and your rig.

This is a moderate to difficult route requiring reliable brakes, good cooling system, and emergency gear. The road is paved but narrow with no guardrails in many sections. Best tackled during dry season (May-September) when landslide risk is lower. Fuel up in Huánuco and carry extra water and food – services are sparse between major towns. You’ll earn panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and experience Peru’s incredible geographic diversity compressed into 400 miles of mountain driving.
