Abiseo Circuit – Cloud Forest to Archaeological Ruins
Peru's most remote cloud forest expedition
The Abiseo Circuit cuts through Parque Nacional Río Abiseo, Peru’s most restricted and pristine cloud forest preserve in the San Martín region. This forgotten route winds through dense montane forest at 2,500-4,200 meters elevation, accessing over 30 unexplored archaeological sites including the massive Los Pinchudos cliff-face tombs. The track follows ancient Chachapoya paths, crossing multiple river systems and navigating through sections where the jungle literally swallows the road for months at a time.
Expert-level difficulty demands serious expedition preparation — this isn’t weekend warrior territory. High-clearance 4WD with recovery gear, winch, and at least 7 days of fuel and food are non-negotiable. The park requires special permits obtained months in advance, and the route is only passable during the dry season (May-September). What you get is access to one of South America’s last untouched wilderness areas, with archaeological sites that see maybe a dozen visitors per year.
