Powerview–Pine Falls Road — Winnipeg River Pinawa Channel Backcountry Loop

Mill roads, granite, and the Winnipeg River.

Moderate

The Tembec paper mill shaped this corner of Manitoba for over a century, and the web of resource roads it left behind between Powerview and Pine Falls gives overlanders direct access to some of the most underrated Canadian Shield country in the province. The route winds along the east bank of the Winnipeg River, dips toward the Pinawa Channel on unmarked two-tracks, and eventually pushes through black spruce corridors to riverside pull-offs where the granite drops straight into the current. Watch for the unmarked logging spur roughly 6 km north of Powerview that cuts toward the old river-channel crossing — it’s the best primitive camp in the area and most people blow right past it.

This is a moderate run with occasional soft shoulders and mud holes after rain, but nothing that demands lockers. A stock high-clearance 4×4 with all-terrain tires handles it fine. Best run late May through September — spring breakup turns the clay-based spurs into skating rinks. No permits required. Fuel in Pine Falls before you head out; nearest services thin out fast north of town. Cell service is essentially nonexistent once you leave the highway. What you get: boreal solitude, Winnipeg River views, and zero crowds.
