Winnipeg River Road — Lac du Bonnet to Seven Sisters Falls Hydro Corridor
Shield granite, hydro history, and zero crowds.
The Winnipeg River corridor east of Lac du Bonnet is one of those Manitoba runs that doesn’t get talked about enough. Gravel and dirt resource roads trace the river’s east bank through Precambrian granite, thick boreal forest, and past the old Seven Sisters Falls hydroelectric dam — a structure that’s been generating power since 1931. The route threads through Manitoba Hydro access corridors and provincial crown land, crossing several seasonal creek drainages that turn sloppy after rain. Watch for the unmarked turnoffs near Pinawa that connect to the old Pinawa Dam Provincial Heritage Park access — one of the most photogenic ghost-infrastructure sites in the province.
This is a high-clearance route, not a rock-crawler, but you’ll want a proper 4WD truck when the clay sections get wet — and they will. Mud tires help significantly in spring and fall. Best run late summer through early fall when creek levels are down and the ground has firmed. Fuel up in Lac du Bonnet; there’s nothing reliable between there and Seven Sisters Falls. Cell service drops out hard once you’re in the granite. No permit required for the crown land sections. What you get is a genuinely lonely river corridor with jaw-dropping Canadian Shield scenery and almost nobody else on it.
