Ruta Provincial 83 Volcán Domuyo Geothermal Circuit

Argentina's highest volcano access challenge

Expert

The road to Volcán Domuyo starts innocent enough from Villa Pehuenia, but by kilometer 40, you’re grinding through volcanic scree at 3,200 meters with your engine gasping in the thin air. This is Argentina’s highest volcano at 4,709 meters, and the access road through the Aguas Calientes geothermal field is a relentless climb over loose pumice and sharp lava rock that’ll punish stock tires and test your cooling system. The payoff comes at Laguna del Domuyo, where sulfur vents and bubbling hot springs create an otherworldly moonscape that few get to witness.

Expert difficulty—don’t attempt this without serious mountain driving experience and a well-prepped rig. You’ll need low range constantly, extra coolant, tire repair kit, and recovery gear for the inevitable stuck situation in volcanic sand. Best tackled December to March when snow clears, but weather changes fast at altitude. No services for 100+ kilometers, so fuel up in Villa Pehuenia and carry water. This route rewards the committed with solitude, pristine geothermal landscapes, and bragging rights to one of South America’s most technical volcano access roads.
