Ruta de los Volcanes – Araucanía Volcanic Circuit

Technical volcanic traverse through ancient forests

Expert

This backcountry circuit cuts through the heart of Araucanía’s volcanic landscape, where 2,000-year-old Araucaria trees stand sentinel beneath smoking Andean peaks. The route connects Curacautín to Lonquimay via brutal volcanic tracks that thread between Llaima and Lonquimay volcanoes, crossing lava fields from historic eruptions and fording the Cautín River’s tributaries during snowmelt season. The trail passes through Conguillio National Park’s restricted zones, where monkey puzzle trees create cathedral-like corridors and volcanic sand swallows unprepared vehicles.

Expert-level terrain demands serious 4WD capability — lockers recommended for the loose volcanic scree sections and deep sand traps that snare even lifted rigs. The river crossings can run waist-deep during spring melt, and the route becomes impassable in winter snow. December through March is the only viable window. CONAF permits required for park sections, and fuel must be carried from Curacautín. This isn’t weekend warrior territory — it’s technical driving through Chile’s most pristine temperate rainforest, where eruptions reshape the landscape and indigenous Mapuche culture still runs deep.
