Nevados de Chillán Volcanic Circuit
Active volcano technical rock challenge
The Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex throws everything at you—loose volcanic ash that’ll test your momentum control, sharp lava rock that eats tires, and thermal areas where steam vents remind you this mountain is very much alive. This high-altitude circuit climbs through ancient lava flows to reach viewpoints of the active crater complex, with natural hot springs at Aguas Calientes providing a perfect recovery spot after technical rocky sections near the ski resort base.
Expert-level terrain demands experienced drivers and properly equipped rigs. Volcanic rock shreds sidewalls, so carry spares and tire repair kits. Snow can close the upper reaches from May through September, and weather changes fast above treeline. High-clearance is mandatory, with lockers recommended for the steep volcanic scree climbs. The reward is rare access to an active volcanic system, world-class hot springs, and views across the Andes that’ll make the rock damage worth every peso.
