Chilkoot Pass Trail Road

Gold Rush route through the mountains of greed

Expert

Before the White Pass Railway, stampeders hauled their mandatory ton of supplies up this brutal mountain trail to reach the Yukon goldfields. Today’s rough 4WD track follows portions of the original 1897 route through Chilkoot Pass, climbing from sea level at Dyea to 3,525 feet at the summit in just 16 brutal miles. You’ll ford Taiya River multiple times, navigate boulder fields that claimed countless pack animals, and hit sections steep enough to require low range and aggressive tires. The Scales area still shows remnants of the tent city where prospectors reorganized their gear before the final push.

This is expert-level terrain demanding full-size 4WD with skid plates, recovery gear, and mechanical sympathy. Rocky creek crossings, loose scree slopes, and weather that changes from sun to sideways sleet in minutes make this a serious undertaking. June through August offers the only reliable window when snow clears enough for vehicle passage. No permits required, but bring maps and emergency supplies — cell service dies at the trailhead. You’re following in the tire tracks of genuine frontier desperation, where men died for the chance to maybe strike it rich.
