Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve — Surprise Creek Flats Dispersed Camp
North of Skagway on the South Klondike Highway (Yukon Highway 2), the road climbs past White Pass Summit and drops into broad creek drainages with gravel benches and boreal spruce. Dispersed camping is legal on the BLM and unclaimed Crown land flanking the US side of the corridor below the summit. Flat ground, creek access, and zero crowd pressure make this a solid overnighter for rigs moving the Skagway-to-Carcross run. No fire rings, no toilets — pack it in, pack it out. Black bears are active; hang your food or use a canister.
Access is straightforward off the paved South Klondike Highway — pull off at any legal gravel bench below tree line on the US side before the Canadian border at White Pass. Snow can linger at elevation into June. Cell service is essentially nonexistent once you leave Skagway. Confirm you’re on the US side of the border before setting up — camping at the customs zone is not allowed.
