Greeba Mountain Track — St John’s to Crosby via Greeba Upland Forest

Parliament's backyard — Manx upland forestry done right.

Moderate

Greeba Mountain sits between the central valley and the island’s western flank, and its forestry tracks are among the more honest off-road kilometres on the Isle of Man. The route departs St John’s — site of Tynwald, the world’s oldest continuous parliament — and climbs northeast through Manx Forestry Commission plantation tracks, breaking briefly onto open heather before the descent toward Crosby and the Baldwin Valley road junction. The forestry surface runs between loose gravel and compacted stone with soft verges, and there are several unsigned junctions in the plantation that’ll send the unprepared in circles; a downloaded OS map is essential. Greeba Castle ruins are visible from the upper track, adding a layer of history to what’s otherwise a quiet woodland working road.

Moderate by Isle of Man standards — the gradient is real but short, and the surface is honest rather than brutal. A standard 4WD or capable SUV with decent clearance handles it in dry conditions; wet weather makes the plantation tracks greasy and the open heather margins soft enough to catch a two-wheel-drive vehicle out. No fuel on route; St John’s has limited services. This is a short, satisfying afternoon drive for anyone based in the central Manx lowlands who wants elevation without committing to Snaefell.
