Sloc Road — Dalby Mountain to Fleshwick Bay via Southern Upland Moorland
Southern Mann's wild moorland drop to a forgotten cove.
The Sloc — from the Manx for ‘hollow’ — is a classic upland crossing that cuts across the southwest shoulder of the island from the Dalby Mountain plateau toward Fleshwick Bay, one of the most isolated coastal coves the Isle of Man has to offer. The road climbs out of Dalby village via narrow hedge-banked lanes before opening onto raw heather moorland above 900 feet. The surface deteriorates to broken tarmac and compacted earth across the exposed saddle, and the descent toward Fleshwick drops sharply on a single-track road with passing places that demand patience. Fleshwick Bay itself rewards the effort — a boulder-strewn shingle cove with no facilities and the kind of silence you have to earn.
The Sloc is accessible to most high-clearance vehicles and capable AWDs but the narrow lanes, steep gradients, and unpredictable surface condition after rain keep it honest. Not an extreme trail by any measure, but a genuine backcountry character run in a small package. Best in summer when the surface dries out — winter crossings can be slick with wet peat runoff. No fuel, no water, no facilities. The Manx countryside access network means you won’t need permits, but passing traffic from farmers and walkers is real. A brilliant evening run when the light hits the Irish Sea from the clifftops.
