Llano Estacado Windmill Heritage Circuit
High Plains windmill roads across endless sky
The Llano Estacado stretches endlessly under the biggest sky in Texas, and this circuit follows the old windmill roads that connected ranch headquarters across the Caprock. Starting near Lubbock, the route winds through grasslands that look the same today as they did when Comanche hunting parties crossed them centuries ago. You’ll navigate by section roads and ranch gates, following fence lines to historic windmills that still pump water for cattle herds scattered across thousands of acres.
Easy driving on mostly gravel ranch roads, but navigation is the real challenge – GPS signals can be spotty and roads aren’t always marked. Bring paper maps and a compass, and don’t count on your phone for directions. Stock vehicle with good ground clearance is plenty, though you’ll want aggressive tires for the occasional sand hill. Best in spring when wildflowers bloom or fall when temperatures drop. Limited camping opportunities on public land, but several working ranches offer paid camping. The reward is experiencing the vastness that defined the Old West.
