Caprock Canyons State Park Trailway Canyon Rim Access
Old railroad grade turned canyon technical challenge
What started as the Fort Worth and Denver Railway’s path through the Texas Panhandle now serves as a gnarly backcountry access route into Caprock Canyons’ most remote sections. This old railroad grade drops 200 feet into Quitaque Creek canyon, where red sandstone walls tower overhead and you’ll cross the creek multiple times before reaching the bison pasture overlook. The technical challenge comes at Devil’s Backbone Ridge, where the track narrows to barely one vehicle width with steep drop-offs on both sides.
This is honest moderate terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and confidence on narrow shelf roads. Spring and fall offer the best conditions — summer heat in the canyon can be brutal, and winter ice makes the rim sections downright dangerous. No permits needed, but bring plenty of water and recovery gear. The payoff is solitude in one of Texas’ most dramatic landscapes, plus the chance to spot the state bison herd from angles most tourists never see.
