Chemin du Lac Matagami — Abitibi-Témiscamingue Northern Mining Road Circuit

Boreal mining roads deep in Abitibi clay belt.

Moderate

North of Matagami, the road grid dissolves fast. This circuit follows a network of forestry and mining access roads pushing into the Abitibi clay belt, skirting the eastern shore of Lac Matagami and punching north toward the old Bell River logging camps. Expect soft shoulders where the road crosses muskeg, wash-corrugated gravel stretches that will rattle your fillings loose, and at least three unbridged creek crossings that run knee-deep in spring. The Matagami Area is still an active mining corridor — you will share the road with ore haulers, so pull wide and stay alert.

Moderate to difficult, depending on season. Spring breakup from late April through early June turns this into an expedition-level slog; mid-July through September is the window. Stock 4WD with at least 8 inches of clearance will get you started, but a lift and all-terrains are honest insurance. Fuel up in Matagami — there is nothing north. No cell service past the Matagami town limit. Dispersed camping on Crown land is permitted, and the walleye fishing along the Bell River is legitimately excellent. Bring your own water or treat from streams.
