James Bay Road (Route du Nord)

867km wilderness highway to hydroelectric megaprojects

Moderate

The James Bay Road cuts a straight line north from Matagami through 867 kilometers of unbroken boreal wilderness to reach Radisson and the La Grande hydroelectric complex. Built in the 1970s to access some of the world’s largest hydroelectric projects, this two-lane asphalt ribbon crosses dozens of rivers including the Eastmain, Opinaca, and Rupert, with fuel stops spread thin across the Cree territory. The road ends at the massive Robert-Bourassa generating station, where you can witness engineering on a scale that humbles.

This is moderate overlanding — good gravel and asphalt with long stretches between services. Any vehicle works, but carry spare fuel, food for three days, and tire repair kit. Summer brings bugs but passable conditions; winter means ice roads and extreme cold. Cell service vanishes after Matagami. You’ll cross some of Canada’s most remote terrain and witness indigenous culture meeting modern mega-projects. It’s a journey into Quebec’s resource frontier where wilderness still wins.
