Haul Road to James Bay

Industrial overlanding to the edge of Hudson Bay

Moderate

The Haul Road stretches 388 miles from Matagami north to the James Bay hydroelectric complex, built in the 1970s to supply the massive dam construction projects with equipment and crews. This is industrial overlanding at its purest — arrow-straight sections through black spruce forest broken by river crossings and fuel stops every 60 miles. The Rupert River bridge at mile 180 marks the halfway point, where you’ll cross from civilization into true wilderness territory where caribou outnumber people 1000 to 1.

Moderate difficulty with Easy sections — mostly well-maintained gravel with occasional washboard and mud holes during spring thaw. Any high-clearance vehicle can handle it, but carry tools, emergency food, and extra fuel since services are sparse and expensive. Best tackled May through October when the road isn’t an ice highway. The payoff is reaching Radisson, the company town at road’s end, where you can camp beside James Bay and watch beluga whales feed in the estuary. It’s not technical wheeling, but few roads deliver this level of true northern remoteness.
