Chemin de la Baie-James — Radisson to Matagami Forestry Highway Circuit

620 km north to the hydro frontier. Alone.

Moderate

The James Bay Road — Route de la Baie-James — is one of North America’s great lonely drives. Built to service the La Grande hydro complex in the 1970s, it runs 620 km dead north from Matagami through muskeg, boreal forest, and tundra transition zones before hitting Radisson and the Robert-Bourassa reservoir. The pavement ends well before the halfway point; from there it’s compacted gravel, frost heaves, and the occasional moose standing in the road like it owns the place — because it does. KM 381 is the only fuel stop between Matagami and Radisson. Don’t miss it.

This is classified as a scenic overland route but don’t confuse easy road surface with easy conditions — the distances alone will strand you if you’re running low on fuel, water, or tire repair supplies. Stock AWD or 4WD with good all-terrain tires handles it fine in summer, but a high-clearance vehicle is smarter. Season runs June through October; freeze-up and spring breakup make it genuinely impassable or damaging. A Cree Nation permit is required for some side roads and community access. The main corridor is public. Fishing stops at Lac des Montagnes and Opinaca Reservoir are world-class and completely free of other tourists. Have a dirty day.
