Camino del Inca – Sucre to Potosí Mountain Route

This mountain crossing follows centuries-old trade routes between Bolivia’s constitutional and mining capitals, where Spanish colonial roads overlap ancient Inca highways through high valleys and mining settlements. The route climbs from Sucre’s whitewashed colonial center up through terraced hillsides to the mining camps that fed Potosí’s legendary silver boom, passing working mines where locals still extract ore using methods unchanged since the 1500s.

The trail rates moderate difficulty with some technical rocky sections and steep grades that require 4WD and good ground clearance. Rainy season (December-March) can make clay sections impassable, so stick to dry months April through November. Fuel up in Sucre and carry extra water – services are sparse between towns. What draws overlanders here is the living history: you’re driving the same routes that carried Inca messengers and Spanish treasure convoys, through landscapes where indigenous communities still practice traditional agriculture on ancient terraces.
