Cordillera Oriental Circuit – Samaipata to Amboró

Where archaeology meets untamed wilderness

Moderate

The Cordillera Oriental Circuit winds through Bolivia’s eastern cloud forests from the archaeological wonder of El Fuerte near Samaipata deep into Amboró National Park’s pristine wilderness. This route connects pre-Columbian ceremonial sites with some of South America’s most biodiverse terrain, threading narrow ridgelines where Andean bears forage and golden cock-of-the-rock nest in misty ravines. Key waypoints include the enigmatic stone platforms of El Fuerte and the park’s Macuñucu checkpoint, gateway to virgin cloud forest.

Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for steep grades, seasonal creek crossings, and muddy conditions that persist year-round in these perpetually damp mountains. Best attempted during dry season (May-October) though afternoon rains are inevitable. National park permits required, and fuel/supplies must be carried from Samaipata since no services exist within the circuit. Camping allowed at designated sites only. What you gain is access to one of Bolivia’s most pristine ecosystems, where jaguars still prowl and over 800 bird species thrive in forests that have never known chainsaws.
