Clear Creek Recreation Area Backcountry Loop
Peaceful forest loop with creek crossings
Clear Creek Recreation Area’s backcountry loop winds through 8 miles of rolling hardwood forest in the Hoosier National Forest, following old logging roads and seasonal creek beds. The route crosses Clear Creek proper at three points—usually ankle-deep fords except during heavy rains when they become proper water features. The most interesting stretch runs along Deer Creek Ridge, offering glimpses of the surrounding valley through the canopy.
Stock high-clearance vehicles handle this moderate trail without drama most of the year. Avoid during wet periods when the clay-heavy soil turns greasy. Best in late spring through fall when the creek crossings are manageable and the hardwoods show their colors. No permits required for day use, but overnight camping requires checking with the Forest Service. Decent cell coverage on the ridges. It’s a solid shakedown run for new overlanders or a mellow day trip for experienced drivers looking to enjoy Indiana’s forest country without the drama.
