San Isabel National Forest — Twin Lakes Reservoir South Shore Dispersed Camp

Twin Lakes sits about 12 miles south of Leadville on US-82, and the south shore access roads off CO-82 drop into dispersed zones where you can park and camp with the full Sawatch Range — including the entire east face of Independence Pass drainage — laid out in front of you. The reservoir’s color on a clear morning is absurd. Sites are informal pullouts in sage and sparse pine, some with fire rings left by previous campers. Weekends in late summer are busy with locals and Front Range day-trippers; weekdays are a different world.

Access roads off US-82 are short dirt spurs, accessible to most vehicles. No facilities. Water is right there but treat it before drinking. This is a mix of USFS and BLM jurisdiction depending on the specific pullout — follow Leave No Trace and the 200-foot setback from water. Fire restrictions often apply by July. Cell service is marginal to none on the south shore.
