Weston Pass Road
Historic toll road over 11,900-foot mountain pass
Weston Pass served as the primary supply route to Leadville during the 1870s mining boom, carrying everything from whiskey to mining equipment over this 11,921-foot saddle between the Mosquito and Park Ranges. The well-maintained dirt road follows the original toll road grade, passing the ruins of Weston townsite where travelers once paid their fees before tackling the switchbacks. The summit offers commanding views across South Park to the Collegiate Peaks, with remnants of the old telephone line still visible along the route.
This is an easy to moderate high-clearance route suitable for most SUVs and trucks, though snow can linger well into June at the pass. The road stays good condition thanks to county maintenance on both sides. No permits required for this public road. Best driven May through October, though thunderstorms are common above treeline in summer afternoons. Limited dispersed camping near the pass, better options down in the valleys. You get historical significance with mountain vistas and an achievable high-altitude crossing that most vehicles can handle.
