Pike-San Isabel National Forest — Weston Pass Summit Dispersed Camp

Right at the top of Weston Pass, the road flattens out just enough for a handful of rigs to tuck into the timber fringe on either side of the saddle. At nearly 12,000 feet you’re above most of the bugs, the views run east over South Park and west down toward the Arkansas River drainage, and you’ll have the Milky Way to yourself on a clear night. Afternoon thunderstorms are a near-daily event in July and August — that’s not a suggestion, that’s a fact. This is an exposed ridgeline camp and lightning doesn’t negotiate. Get up and moving early. Camped-in fire rings exist but fire restrictions frequently apply at this elevation; always confirm current restrictions.

Access from either side is high-clearance 2WD when dry but the summit area can hold snow well into June and get slick fast after rain. The road is well-documented and used by both wheelers and mountain bikers on the Colorado Trail connector. No water, no toilets. Nearest services are back in Fairplay to the east or down into the Arkansas Valley to the west.
