Cottonwood Pass Road — Buena Vista to Crested Butte via the Collegiate Peaks High Crossing

Cottonwood Pass Road climbs west out of Buena Vista on pavement before transitioning to good gravel near treeline, cresting at 12,126 feet on the Continental Divide with views across the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness that’ll stop you cold. The western descent into Taylor Park drops you through alpine meadows, then timber, onto the Taylor River drainage — one of Colorado’s best backcountry fishing corridors. From Taylor Park it’s a straight shot to Crested Butte via Taylor Canyon. The pass sits on Gunnison National Forest land, fully open to the public with no fee or permit required. It’s one of the more accessible high-pass crossings in the state — the county has paved the eastern approach as of recent years, but the high sections and western descent remain unmaintained gravel that gets rough and rutted by late summer.

A capable stock SUV can handle Cottonwood Pass in dry conditions — it’s not a technical 4×4 run, it’s a high-clearance gravel road with real consequences if weather moves in fast. Snow can fall any month above 11,000 feet; July through September is the reliable window. The pass typically opens in late May or June depending on snowpack. No permits, no fees, dispersed camping available on both sides inside the national forest. Carry extra fuel — Buena Vista and Crested Butte are your last stops. This is the straightforward way to link the Arkansas Valley to the Elk Mountains without touching pavement for 90% of the crossing.
