Letchworth Gorge Rim Road

Rim route through NY's Grand Canyon

Difficult

The Letchworth Gorge Rim Road runs 14 miles along the eastern edge of the Genesee River Gorge, providing access to maintenance facilities and fire towers while offering spectacular canyon views. Built in the 1930s by CCC crews, this narrow gravel road connects Wolf Creek to the Mount Morris Dam, passing three major waterfalls including the 107-foot Middle Falls. The route requires careful navigation around steep drop-offs and includes several technical sections where the road hugs cliff edges with minimal guardrails.

Difficult rating due to narrow passages, loose shale surfaces, and proximity to 400-foot drops into the gorge. 4WD with low range recommended for steep grades and rocky sections. Park permits required year-round, with seasonal closures during waterfowl nesting season (April-May). No camping along the rim road, but the experience provides unmatched access to one of New York’s most dramatic geological features from angles impossible on foot.
