Allegany State Park Administrative Backcountry Road System

CCC-era fire roads through New York's largest state park

Moderate

Allegany’s backcountry road network opens up New York’s largest state park beyond what day-hikers ever see, threading through dense hardwood forests and connecting abandoned Civilian Conservation Corps work camps from the 1930s. The main artery follows the old Summit Road that once linked fire towers, now gated but accessible with park permission for serious overlanders. The challenging section drops into the Thunder Rocks area where massive boulders create natural obstacles, and the route to Science Lake requires navigating around washouts from recent flooding.

Moderate difficulty with some expert-level rock gardens and steep grades on unmaintained sections. Stock high-clearance vehicles can handle most routes, but 4WD recommended for wet conditions and the steeper fire tower approaches. Contact the park office for backcountry access permits — they’re selective but reasonable for legitimate overlanding. Best from late spring through fall, though mud season makes some sections impassable. Designated camping areas only within park boundaries, but dispersed camping available on adjacent state forest lands. This is proper Eastern wilderness — thick forest, wildlife, and genuine solitude 90 minutes from Buffalo.
