Appalachian Foothill Mining Heritage Circuit
Coal country heritage through reclaimed wilderness
This circuit follows old haul roads through Ohio’s coal country, where massive draglines once stripped away hillsides in Athens and Vinton counties. The route connects abandoned mining sites with spectacular overlooks of reclaimed grasslands that now host elk herds and prairie restoration. You’ll navigate past the massive Wilds conservation area and thread through Sunday Creek Coal Company’s former operations, including the impressive highwall cuts near Moonville.
Moderate difficulty with some steep grades and loose shale requiring high-clearance vehicles. Stock 4WD handles most sections fine, though aggressive tires help on the steeper climbs. Run year-round but avoid during heavy rains when clay sections turn treacherous. No permits required on public sections but respect private mining property boundaries clearly marked. Fill up in Athens before heading out. This route offers unique insight into Ohio’s industrial heritage plus surprisingly good wildlife viewing in the reclaimed areas.
