David Thompson Highway — Abraham Lake to Siffleur Wilderness Trailhead

The stretch of Highway 11 (David Thompson Highway) running west from Nordegg past Abraham Lake toward the Siffleur Wilderness boundary is one of Alberta’s most dramatic overland corridors. Abraham Lake itself is man-made — created by the Bighorn Dam in 1972 — but its shoreline feels prehistoric, with wind-scoured hoodoos and brilliant turquoise water backed by the Clearwater Range. Side roads peel off toward the North Saskatchewan River flats and primitive campsites. The Siffleur Falls trailhead marks the practical end of casual access; beyond it, terrain gets serious fast. Watch for ice bubbles forming under the lake surface in deep winter — it’s a legit photography destination too.

The highway itself is paved but the side access roads and river-flat pulls are pure gravel and sand, often muddy post-rain. A high-clearance 4WD handles most of the side routes comfortably; lockers help if you push toward the river bars. Best window is July through September before early snowfall closes the higher side roads. Fuel in Rocky Mountain House or Nordegg before heading west — there is nothing at the lake. No permit required for forest reserve access. Cell service disappears completely west of Nordegg. Pack for cold nights year-round at this elevation.
