Allegany State Park Truck Trail 1
Western New York's hidden backcountry gateway
Truck Trail 1 cuts through the heart of Allegany State Park’s 65,000 acres, following old logging roads and maintenance routes that most visitors never see. The trail winds past Bear Cave and through dense hardwood forests before hitting the notorious Quaker Bridge crossing over Quaker Run — a rocky ford that’s claimed more than a few oil pans when spring runoff turns it into a torrent.
This is solid intermediate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear. Spring mud season (March-May) turns the clay sections into slick nightmares, while late fall offers the best conditions with firm footing and clear views. No permits needed, but respect the park’s camping regulations. The reward is solitude in New York’s wildest corner and access to backcountry fishing spots that see maybe a dozen anglers all year.
