Finger Lakes Keuka Lake Outlet Wine Trail Back Roads

Wine country back roads with canal history and creek fords

Easy

The Keuka Lake Outlet Wine Trail follows the old Crooked Lake Canal towpath and connects forgotten mining roads that once hauled shale and limestone from quarries above Penn Yan. The route weaves through working vineyards on dirt roads that most GPS units don’t recognize, crossing Keuka Lake Outlet multiple times via shallow fords that run clear year-round. Mile marker 8 brings you to the abandoned Eggleston Glen Quarry, where massive stone cuts reveal the engineering ambition of 1800s canal builders.

Easy to moderate driving suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though spring mud season can get sloppy between vineyard rows. The creek fords are typically 12-18 inches deep but can rise after heavy rain. Best driven May through October when vineyards are active and tasting rooms welcome muddy boots. No permits required, but respect private property and stick to established roads. Multiple wineries offer camping or nearby campgrounds provide base camp options for a proper wine country adventure.
