Quebrada de las Señoritas San Juan Wine Route

Colonial mining trails through high-altitude vineyards.

Moderate

The Quebrada de las Señoritas winds through San Juan’s Ullum Valley, where Spanish colonists once dug silver mines into red sandstone cliffs and modern vintners now grow Malbec at 1,200 meters elevation. This backcountry circuit follows old mule tracks between the ghost town of Las Flores and the working vineyards near Villa Media Agua, crossing seasonal creek beds and dodging irrigation channels carved by Huarpe indigenous peoples centuries before the Spanish arrived. The route passes through Quebrada de Zonda Natural Park, where condors nest in slot canyons and guanacos graze on sparse highland grass.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for creek crossings and loose gravel sections, but nothing too technical for a competent driver. Spring and fall offer the best conditions — summer gets brutally hot and winter can freeze the water crossings solid. Fill up in San Juan city and pack extra water; some stretches go 60 kilometers between settlements. Several estancias along the route welcome overlanders for wine tastings and basic camping. You’ll earn spectacular sunset views over the Precordillera mountains and taste some of Argentina’s highest-altitude wines in valleys most tourists never see.
