Ruta del Desierto de Altar

Sonoran sand sea volcanic crossing

Difficult

This remote Sonoran Desert route threads through El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, crossing ancient lava fields and massive sand dunes between Puerto Peñasco and the Arizona border. The track follows old mining roads and cattle trails past perfectly preserved volcanic craters like Elegante, where desert bighorn sheep still roam. Sand driving skills are essential as the route crosses shifting dunes that can swallow vehicles whole—locals call it ‘el mar de arena’ (the sea of sand).

Difficult route requiring sand recovery gear, GPS navigation, and desert survival kit including extra water, food, and communication devices. Best run October through March when brutal summer heat subsides. Permits required through CONANP for backcountry access. Come prepared for complete isolation, soft sand, and navigation challenges where tracks disappear in shifting dunes. The reward: camping under star-filled skies in one of North America’s wildest desert landscapes, where coyote songs echo off volcanic peaks.
